Is your dog protected from heartworm?

We have recently diagnosed 2 cases of heartworm disease at My Pet Hub.

Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes so pets in Townsville are at high risk of exposure to heartworm. The adult worms (measuring up to 35cm long) live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels. Some signs of heartworm may include:

  • A cough
  • Reluctance to exercise or easily fatigued by exercise
  • Decreased appetite
  • Weight loss

In advanced cases, heart failure, difficulty breathing and sudden death can occur.

We would like to remind everyone that prevention is by far the best option when it comes to heartworm. This can be done with a monthly product or an annual injection. If your pet hasn’t been on prevention, it is essential they have a heartworm test before starting prevention to avoid serious side effects.
